Despite the wet weather on the afternoon of March 12, delegates descended on the shopping precinct with visible excitement and pleasure while on a three-day tour visiting shopping centres in different provinces, including Town Square at Newmarket in Alberton.

They arrived at Newmarket Park just after 15:30 in two large buses specially booked to transport them during their tour.

Delegates were received at Town Square in Newmarket by its senior management, including Riaan Jonker, supporting staff, and the square’s marketing and communications team.

They were taken on a guided walk-through of the shopping precinct, which concluded at Tiger’s Milk. Jonker addressed delegates on the history of the square, how it has developed over the years, and the positive impact it has had on Alberton.

“Town Square at Newmarket serves as more than just a shopping and retail destination; it is a community and gathering place hosting increasingly popular night markets, family-oriented outings and opportunities for people to connect. It has a lively atmosphere where visitors are able to walk around and browse stalls, discover the best of Alberton, and enjoy time with family and friends,” said Jonker.

Town Square at Newmarket is a development that opened in 2024 and is nestled on more than 34 000 square metres.

Some of its well-known restaurants are Doppio Zero, Hussar Grill, La Parada, Tiger’s Milk and Ribs & Burgers, among others. It combines lifestyle, a vibrant environment and culture, cuisine and commerce.

Commenting on their win, Jonker said: “It is a huge privilege to receive such an award, not only for us but for the people of Alberton. I live in Alberton myself, and it is very important for us to have a facility where we can shop, with an area that also has a lifestyle component. We have various restaurants and host night markets every second month. So this win is something really special for us, and we hope the people of Alberton will continue coming to Town Square at Newmarket to enjoy themselves.”

Jonker also added that they intend to develop and open phase two of Town Square, which will be situated between the existing Town Square, MediMix and Mall at Newmarket, and is expected to cover about 15 000m².

This is where Albertonians and those living in surrounding areas can expect entertainment venues for adults and children.
