Brackendowns SAPS raises awareness about commercial crime at local malls
Members of Brackendowns SAPS engaged with shoppers at three Alberton malls to educate residents about commercial crimes and online safety.
Brackendowns SAPS hosted a commercial crime awareness campaign at several shopping centres in Alberton on March 15.
The campaign was led by Brackendowns SAPS station commander Colonel Van der Westhuizen, together with the Social Crime Prevention unit and other stakeholders.
Officials visited Brackengate Shopping Centre, Brackens Gardens Shopping Centre and Meyersdal Mall, where they engaged with shoppers and distributed pamphlets.

According to Constable Sakhe Bizwapi, they wanted to educate residents about commercial crimes and the risks associated with online transactions.
“We sensitised the community about commercial crimes and encouraged residents to be cautious when buying goods online,” said Bizwapi.
Community members were advised to verify sellers, use trusted platforms and avoid sharing personal or banking details with unknown individuals when making online purchases.

Approximately 350 community members were reached during the awareness drive.
The initiative involved several stakeholders, including SAPS officials and CPF members who assisted in engaging with the public.
Bizwapi said awareness campaigns remain an important tool in helping residents protect themselves from fraud and other commercial crimes.
