Eden Park family demands justice after 13-year-old killed in hit-and-run incident
After days in critical condition, 13-year-old Theollyn Royal Cotzee passed away, leaving an Eden Park family grieving and calling for justice. Questions remain about the driver’s actions following the crash.
An Eden Park family is mourning the loss of 13-year-old Theollyn Royal Cotzee, who died after being struck in an alleged hit-and-run incident earlier this month.
According to information shared with the Alberton Record, the incident occurred in early March when Theollyn was hit by a vehicle. The driver allegedly fled the scene, leaving the teenager critically injured.
Theollyn was rushed to the hospital, where he remained in a critical condition for several days. Despite efforts by medical staff, he succumbed to his injuries on March 12.
The young boy was laid to rest, with family, friends and members of the community gathering to pay their respects. Tributes have since poured in, with some describing Theollyn as a loved and cherished child whose life was cut tragically short. The family has raised concerns about the alleged driver’s conduct following the incident.
It is claimed that the driver only came forward the following evening after a social media post circulated calling for information. There are also unconfirmed allegations that the driver may have been under the influence of alcohol and substances at the time of the incident. Adding to the family’s distress are claims that the driver’s father allegedly suggested that nothing would come of the matter. These allegations remain unverified.
In reaction to the tragic incident, an Eden Park rights group released a statement. “iMatter NPO, our management, staff and greater community, are deeply saddened by the passing of Theollyn Coetzee, a 13-year-old child from our community, following a tragic road incident that took place in one of our main Roads. Our thoughts and prayers remain with the family, siblings, and community as they continue to face this profound loss,” read the statement.
Despite this, the driver’s mother has reportedly shown support to the grieving family and attended the funeral.
Theollyn’s family has since called for justice. “This tragedy is a painful reminder that our children should be safe, especially on pavements and in spaces meant to protect them. In times like these, compassion, accountability, and collective responsibility matter most,” added iMatter NPO in their statement.
