Residents in Alberton receive free eye tests from Alberton Lions Club

Residents in Alberton received free eye tests and access to affordable spectacles during a community outreach event hosted by the Alberton Lions Club.

The Alberton Lions Club hosted a free eye-testing event at Ligstad, 32 Van Riebeeck Avenue, Alberton North.

Residents attended on a walk-in basis and received free vision screenings conducted by final-year optometry students.

The initiative’s main purpose was to improve access to basic eye care services for community members at no cost.

The Alberton Lions Club has been hosting the initiative for about 8 years and continues to run it three to four times a year to support the community.

Residents who required reading glasses received standard readers free of charge. Those needing prescription spectacles could choose frames on-site, with orders sent to the Lions Bright Sight facility in Benoni for production.
The spectacles are offered at subsidised prices, starting at R300 for single-vision lenses and R600 for bifocals, making them more accessible to those who may not afford private eye care.

“We try to help the community as much as we can, especially when it comes to vision,” said Sandy King, vision chairperson for the Alberton Lions Club.

Alberton Lions Club also assists individuals who may urgently need glasses outside of these events.
