New principal Reinier Pistorius ready to build on strong foundation at Laerskool President Steyn
With decades of teaching and leadership experience, Pistorius aims to build on the school’s strong foundation, introduce modern technology initiatives like coding and robotics, and create a safe, supportive environment where learners can thrive academically and personally.
Laerskool President Steyn has welcomed experienced educator Reinier Pistorius as its new principal, bringing with him decades of teaching and leadership experience.
Born in Pretoria and raised mainly in Benoni, Pistorius says education has always been part of his life.
“I grew up in a family of teachers. Both my grandparents were teachers, and one of my parents also studied to become a teacher. You can say it’s in my DNA,” he explained.
After completing his studies at the Pretoria College of Education, Pistorius began his teaching career at Laerskool Edleen, where he says real learning began.
“What you learn in college and what you experience in the classroom are two different things. That’s where you truly learn how to teach,” he said.
His early years were shaped by strong mentorship, which influenced his calm and considered leadership style.
“I had a very relaxed and supportive principal. That shaped how I manage today. I’m not someone who shouts. I listen first and then make informed decisions.”
Throughout his career, Pistorius has taught a wide range of subjects, starting as a generalist teacher, then specialising in Afrikaans for 12 years, and later teaching history to Grade Seven learners.
Over time, his role in education evolved.
“Most teachers have the vision of becoming a principal one day, but in the beginning, you’re just trying to get through each day. As you grow, you’re given more opportunities and begin to see the bigger picture.”
He steadily progressed through the ranks, serving as a teacher, head of department, and deputy principal, while also contributing to various school committees.
His journey includes positions at Laerskool Kruinsig, Brentwood Park Primary School and Laerskool Baanbreker before taking up his current role.
Looking back on his time as a deputy principal, Pistorius highlights the importance of fairness and thoughtful decision-making.
“Managing people taught me to be objective. You need to listen to all sides and gather all the information before making a decision.”
His leadership is grounded in strong personal values.
“Integrity is very important to me. My word is my honour. I believe in being humble and treating everyone with respect. If you respect others, they will respect you.”
As he steps into his new role, Pistorius is focused on continuity and growth.
“We already have a wonderful school. I want to build on what is already there, grow with the learners and staff, and create a positive environment. This must be a place where children feel safe and can just be kids. For some, school is their safe haven, and that’s something we must protect.”
He also plans to gradually introduce new ideas, particularly in technology.
“We want to stay up to date. That includes looking into coding and robotics and making sure our technology supports modern learning.”
Pistorius emphasised that his leadership approach will be open and collaborative.
“My door is always open. Parents, teachers and learners are welcome to come forward with suggestions or concerns. We are building a community together.”
A father of five and grandfather of three, Pistorius currently resides in Boksburg and commutes to the school.
With a passion for education and a deep commitment to learners, he hopes to make a lasting impact.
“It’s special to be part of a child’s journey. One day, when they look back, I want them to say this was a wonderful place to be.”
