Spike in dog poisoning cases raises alarm in Alberton

Residents urged to stay alert as authorities warn of rising cases linked to crime and call for swift reporting and evidence collection.

Residents of Alberton have been urged to remain vigilant following a sharp increase in dog poisoning incidents.

The Brackendowns CPF has warned that cases of animal poisoning have escalated significantly in the area, prompting concern among pet owners and community safety groups.

The community forum stressed that such incidents are not only distressing but are often linked to broader criminal activity, including burglary.

Authorities are encouraging residents to report any suspected cases of poisoning to SAPS without delay.

Opening a formal case docket at the nearest police station is considered essential to enable proper investigation and potential prosecution.

Animal poisoning is a criminal offence under the Animals Protection Act 71 of 1962, and officials have emphasised that these incidents must be treated with the seriousness they deserve.

Community members are also advised to assist in preserving evidence where it is safe to do so.

“If possible, residents should carefully collect any suspected poison residue or bait using gloves and secure it, as it may serve as crucial evidence,” the CPF noted.

Additionally, a veterinary report confirming poisoning can strengthen a case and support legal action against perpetrators.

The CPF has reiterated the importance of community awareness and cooperation in addressing the issue, urging residents to stay alert and take proactive steps to protect their pets and properties.
