UPDATE: Lift at Silwerkroon Flats restored after resident’s injury and weeks-long breakdown
Elderly residents at Silwerkroon Flats in Raceview welcome the repair of a long-out-of-service lift following concerns that a 74-year-old woman suffered a serious fall and broke her hip and leg during the outage.
The lift at Silwerkroon Flats has been repaired after being out of service for several weeks, following serious concerns raised by residents after an elderly woman was injured in a fall.
The breakdown had sparked alarm at the facility after Oliver Billy, an 87-year-old resident, reported that his 74-year-old wife suffered a serious fall down the stairs, breaking her hip and leg.
Residents had previously claimed the incident could have been avoided if the lift had been functioning.
Concerns about the faulty lift escalated further when residents reported that the system had been out of order for an extended period, forcing elderly occupants to use the stairs despite mobility challenges.
Ward councillor Tim Denny confirmed on May 15 that the lift has now been fixed.
He said resident Connie Malan confirmed that it is working again and that new cables were installed from the top down during the repairs.
“The lift is working, and new cables were put in from top to bottom. I just say thank you. You did push,” Malan said.
