“Even the youth of South Africa are trying to start these same enterprises. That is our territory. We know what happened in this infamous street, and therefore we do not want those mistakes of the past again,” he said.

According to the memorandum, the organisation describes itself as a non-political civic movement representing residents from Thokoza and surrounding communities, including Katlehong, Vosloorus, Palm Ridge, Eden Park, Alberton and Thina Sönke.

The movement stated that unemployment in the community had worsened over the years, allegedly because some companies employ undocumented immigrants ahead of residents.

Among the demands listed were that companies stop employing undocumented immigrants, prioritise South African citizens for employment opportunities, and establish an Alrode Stakeholders Committee or business chamber with equal representation from businesses and the community.

The memorandum also referenced sections of the Immigration Act relating to undocumented immigrants, employing undocumented foreign nationals and aiding or abetting illegal residence in South Africa.

Organisers said companies were given seven days to respond to the memorandum and its demands.

The protest rules included no alcohol, no political regalia and no weapons during the march.
