Social Development urges communities to stand against discrimination of people with albinism

As International Albinism Day is observed on June 13, the Gauteng Department of Social Development is calling for greater protection, respect, and inclusion for people with albinism while encouraging communities to reject harmful myths and discrimination.

The Gauteng Department of Social Development has commemorated International Albinism Day by reaffirming its commitment to protecting the rights and dignity of people living with albinism.

Observed annually on June 13, the day serves as an opportunity to raise awareness about the challenges they face and to promote equality and inclusion.

Celebrated under the theme ‘Proudly in my skin: Celebrating all skin tones’, this year’s campaign highlights the importance of embracing diversity while addressing discrimination, social exclusion, and harmful myths that continue to affect the safety and opportunities of people with albinism.

The department said it continues to work with communities, schools, and non-profit organisations to raise awareness, provide psychosocial support, and strengthen efforts to protect vulnerable groups.
Gauteng MEC for Social Development, Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko, stressed the importance of ensuring that people with albinism are treated with dignity and respect.

“Persons with albinism must be protected, respected, and treated with dignity. As a government, we continue to work with communities to fight discrimination and ensure that no one is left behind,” she said.

The department also encouraged members of the public to report any form of discrimination or abuse against people with albinism and to support initiatives that foster understanding, acceptance, and inclusion.

By marking International Albinism Day, the Gauteng Department of Social Development hopes to build safer, more inclusive communities where every individual, regardless of skin tone or condition, can live free from prejudice and discrimination.
