WATCH | South African-owned businesses, spaza shops impacted by anti-migrant marchers

A SAPS officer rushed into a small shopping complex in Palm Ridge, which houses Pick n Pay, Pep, and KFC, telling workers to close shop.

The June 30 anti-migrant marches have seen many shops across Palm Ridge shut down. A group of marchers gathered on Celtis Street, chanting “abahambe” – a phrase used to order undocumented migrants to leave SA.

Foreign-owned businesses and spaza shops are not the only ones affected by the march.

A small shopping complex in Palm Ridge, located at 63 Celtis Street, had its gate shut down after an SAPS officer rushed in, telling workers to close shop as marchers walked towards the area.

The shopping complex houses Pick n Pay, Pep, and KFC. These shops employ a number of local residents.

An Engen Palm Ridge convenience store also closed its gates, with workers inside the premises standing anxiously. There is also a law enforcement presence. EMPD’s Katlehong precinct is keeping watch over marchers, assisted by local security companies.

On Celtis Street, the Meat Choice butcher shop is temporarily closed due to the marchers’ presence in the area. The Alberton Record is following developments from the ground. Follow for updates.
