Mall at Newmarket marked Mandela Day by donating groceries worth R5 000 to My Huis Child and Youth Care Centre in Verwoerdpark on July 6, bringing together tenants, shoppers and community members in support of vulnerable children.
The donation formed part of the mall’s Big Savings Basket campaign and aimed to provide practical assistance to the facility while honouring the legacy of Nelson Mandela.
My Huis Child and Youth Care Centre is one of eight children’s homes supported by the Doxa Deo Movement, uMephi, and the Welfare Council of the Apostolic Faith Mission Church, providing care and support to vulnerable children.
Giving back to the community
Mall at Newmarket marketing manager Sihle Makama said, “Mandela Day reminds us that even the smallest act of kindness can have a lasting impact. As part of our Big Savings Basket campaign, we saw an opportunity to extend the campaign beyond the shopping experience by donating grocery items valued at R5 000 to a local children’s care centre.

“It was a meaningful way to support our community while honouring the legacy of Nelson Mandela,” he said.
He explained that My Huis Child and Youth Facility was chosen for its proximity to the mall and its important role in caring for vulnerable children.
“Doxa Deo is situated just a few kilometres from Mall at Newmarket and provides essential care and support to vulnerable children within our community. By partnering with a local organisation, we can make a meaningful contribution where it is needed most and support those who are closest to home,” said Makama.
Honouring Mandela’s legacy
Makama said, “Mandela Day is a powerful reminder that we all have a role to play in creating positive change. It provides an opportunity for the mall, our tenants and our shoppers to come together in the spirit of generosity and compassion, demonstrating that collective acts of kindness can make a meaningful difference.”
He added that shopping centres have a responsibility to contribute to the communities they serve.
“Shopping centres are more than places to shop. They are part of the communities they serve. Supporting local organisations helps strengthen our community, build meaningful relationships and create a lasting social impact.”
The donation will help meet some of the facility’s daily grocery needs while allowing its resources to be directed towards other priorities.
He added that community upliftment remains an important part of Mall at Newmarket’s annual corporate social investment programme.
“Community upliftment forms an important part of Mall at Newmarket’s annual marketing and CSI programme.
“Throughout the year, we partner with local organisations, including Life on the Streets (LOTS), schools and various community groups to support outreach, awareness and upliftment initiatives. We remain committed to building meaningful partnerships and making a positive, lasting difference in the communities we serve.”
