Katlehong music producer Neo Makwa, known as DJ Neo Makwa, is continuing to put Katlehong on the map after receiving a nomination in the best hip hop song category at the 2026 Metro FM Music Awards for Umguzumbane Summer featuring Kwesta.

Although the awards have already taken place, the nomination remains a proud achievement for Makwa and the Katlehong community that has supported him throughout his career.

A former Parklands High School learner, Makwa built his reputation by producing music that reflects the realities of township life.

His songs connect with listeners through themes of ambition, hardship, love, disappointment, survival and hope.

His career has not always been smooth. After experiencing a period when work slowed down and he became less visible in the music industry, Makwa chose to reinvent himself.

While continuing to produce music, he also built a successful career as a DJ, proving that setbacks can become growth opportunities.

Makwa’s commitment to his community goes beyond music.

Together with long-time collaborator Kwesta, he supported a Mandela Day outreach initiative that donated R15 000 to the Break Through Centre NPO, which assists vulnerable children and community members.

For a township often associated with crime, unemployment and social challenges, Makwa represents another side of Katlehong.
