Alberton Dam could host new parkrun as community rallies for support
Volunteers needed: Push underway to establish weekly Parkrun at Alberton Dam.
A push is underway to establish a regular parkrun at Alberton Dam, with organisers calling on Alberton residents to show their support and help make the community event a reality.
The initiative is currently an expression of community interest and forms part of the process of exploring whether a weekly event could be established at the popular green space.
The goal is to prove to parkrun officials that there is strong local backing for a weekly 5km walk or run at the dam.
A key step in the process will take place on September 5 at 08:00, when community members are invited to join a trial walk of one of the proposed route options.
“We’ll be walking one of the proposed route options as a trial. If you’re interested to see what we’re trying to do, join us,” the call-out states.
Everyone is welcome, whether you walk or run.
As part of the application, organisers also need volunteers.
They are looking for 10 volunteers to help run the event, but say that if 14 people commit to volunteering just one Saturday a month, it would make a very convincing case for approval.
Remember, parkrun is a free, weekly, timed 5km event held in parks and open spaces around the world, run entirely by volunteers.
If approved, an Alberton Dam parkrun would give residents a new opportunity for fitness, social connection and community engagement.
Residents interested in supporting the proposal, volunteering, or joining the trial can follow updates on community pages or call 082 800 9074.
