A ladies’ event in Meyersdal placed the spotlight on the nurses and caregivers who support patients during end-of-life care.
Butterflies of Hope, a fundraiser for Stepping Stone Palliative Care Services, took place on August 29 at Doxa Deo Meyersdal in Alberton.
Held under the theme ‘Every life leaves a mark’, the event brought women together for a morning aimed at encouraging, inspiring and making a difference.
The fundraiser featured speaker Melinda Viljoen, MC Carien Botha and musician Janie Bay.
Caregivers honoured for dedication
Viljoen highlighted the poignant reality faced by palliative staff, noting that their team loses many patients each month due to the nature of their illnesses.
She explained that these nurses and caregivers remain beside patients through their final moments, walking them home after they pass before returning to care for the next person. Despite the heavy emotional commitment required, she said their dedication often goes unnoticed because they do not earn high salaries.
She added that their true motivation extends beyond financial reward, driven by a deep love for their work.
The morning brought hope, love and dignity to the community while celebrating the lasting mark left by patients, families and healthcare workers.
