WATCH: Alberton High School hosts first-ever Walk of Excellence

Alberton High School rolls out the carpet for its Grade Eight learners, marking their official welcome with a symbolic bell-ringing ceremony.

Alberton High School marked a historic milestone on January 19 by hosting its first-ever Walk of Excellence, bringing together learners, educators, parents, and the wider community in a united show of support and school pride.

The walk, which took place at 11:00, saw learners, staff members, parents, members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) and CPF walking together around the streets surrounding the school.

A police van led the procession with its siren on, symbolising safety, visibility and a strong stance against violence.

Following the walk, participants gathered inside the school grounds, where Alberton High officially welcomed its Grade Eight learners.

As part of the ceremony, the Grade Eight learners were honoured with a red-carpet walk, after which each learner rang the school bell by pulling a rope, symbolising their formal entry into the Alberton High School community.

Addressing those in attendance, principal Liezelle de Bruin explained the deeper meaning behind the initiative.

“The walk around the school carries several important messages. Firstly, unity and togetherness, showing that learners, staff and management at Alberton High stand as one.

“Secondly, school pride, where we celebrate our values, ethos, culture and identity. It also promotes positive behaviour by reinforcing expectations for conduct and making a visible pledge to uphold discipline.”

She added that the initiative also sends a strong safety message.

“It represents our safety and anti-violence stance and promotes an educational year of guidance and support where learners can feel safe and encouraged.”

De Bruin expressed her appreciation to all who participated.

“I want to thank each and every one of you. Thank you to the community and parents who came forward today. To the police force and CPF, thank you so much. Wherever we go and whatever we do, we know we can always reach out to you and that you are here to support us.”

Turning her attention to the school’s newest learners, she officially welcomed the Grade Eights.

“You are now officially part of Alberton High School. I want you to take a step back and realise the big task that lies ahead of you here.

“You have big steps to fill and big paths to walk, but remember, you are never alone. We are here for you.”
She also acknowledged the role of staff in guiding learners.

“I want to thank the executive council, as well as the Grade Eight teachers and tutors. Thank you for leading them and showing them what will be expected of them,” she said.

The Walk of Excellence marked a powerful start to the academic year, reinforcing Alberton High School’s commitment to unity, discipline, safety and excellence.
