Update: McDonald’s Alberton hosts fundraiser to help learner reach Dubai academic tour dream

A fundraiser on July 4 at McDonald’s Alberton will help an Alberton High School learner raise funds for her once-in-a-lifetime academic tour to Dubai.

An Alberton learner’s dream of attending an international academic tour has received a boost after McDonald’s Alberton stepped in to support her fundraising journey.

Shaylee Koekemoer, a learner from Alberton High School, was previously selected to take part in the 11th Annual Academic Achievers Tour organised by Travel and Sport after being recognised for her outstanding academic performance.

The tour, scheduled for December 2026, will take top-performing learners from across South Africa abroad for educational experiences, including university visits, private lectures and cultural activities.

Koekemoer chose the Dubai tour, which includes visits to leading universities, networking opportunities with fellow academic achievers, and excursions to destinations such as the Burj Khalifa and Ferrari World.
The cost of the trip is R59 990.

After Koekemoer’s story was shared by Alberton Record, McDonald’s Alberton reached out to the family and offered to assist with fundraising efforts.

Her mother, Belinda Volschenk, said the family is grateful for the support and hopes the partnership will help Koekemoer reach her goal.

“We are incredibly grateful for their generosity and willingness to get involved in supporting a young student striving to achieve her dreams,” she said.

A fundraising event will take place at McDonald’s Alberton on July 4 from 12:00 to 15:00.

Community members can support Koekemoer by purchasing a meal, with 10% of the spend going towards her tour costs when ordered at the designated till point.

The fundraiser will take place at McDonald’s Alberton on Clinton Road, New Redruth. The offer excludes the drive-through.

Volschenk said the family is now only two months away from the final payment deadline and is hopeful that the community and local businesses will continue to rally behind Koekemoer.

“Every contribution, no matter the size, helps bring her one step closer to this incredible opportunity,” she said.
