I am sending this letter to you as a concerned resident of Alberton, and feel that I must take some remedial action to have this safety hazard rectified as the municipality has no respect for the safety of our children.
There is a distribution switch or fuse panel on the pavement outside the Taurus Complex in Mc Bride Street in Brackenhurst. It has live power connections open and is easily accessible to people walking by. This hazard has been like this for several months now.
Many school children pass this box on their way from school and I am dreading the day when I receive the news that someone has been electrocuted.
The chairperson of the Taurus Body Corporate, Meryl van Dyk, has reported this matter to the municipality on numerous occasions, each time receiving promises that it will be repaired. Van Dyk has also sent an email to the municipality to which she has had no reply.
Phone calls reporting this matter to the call centre were made on the following days:
• December 15, 2020 – twice with reference number 4511602.
• January 12, 2021 – followed up twice.
• January 14, 2021 – Reported again with new reference number 4546222.
• January 22, 2021 – Followed up.
A door of the distribution board is still missing completely, and the lock on the upper door is unlatched. As going through the correct channels does not work, we are hoping that the power of the written word may assist in making our suburb a safer place.
Trevor van Dyk
• After numerous efforts to request comment from the City of Ekurhuleni regarding this matter, no response was provided to the RECORD.
