Gauteng riders too good for their rivals
Gauteng riders proved just too good for their rivals.
Schools in Gauteng continued their regional winning streak when they emerged victorious at the 2018 Spur Schools MTB League Inter-schools final in Magaliesburg on October 5 and 6.
Gauteng riders proved just too good for their rivals from the Western Cape and edged them out by a narrow margin of twelve points (242 points to 230). In all, Gauteng representatives achieved nine podium places, two firsts, three seconds and four third placings.
Bertie Anderson of Magalies Spesiale Skool achieved both first places. Second places went to Keegan Bontekoning (Monument High School), Aaron Heynecke (Jeppe Boys), and Kyle du Toit (Randburg High School). Third places were achieved by Monique du Toit (Menlopark High School), Wicus Breytenbach (Garsfontein High School), Azulde Britz (Cornwall College) and Keegan Bontekoning (Monument High School).
This year Gauteng attracted a total of 3 337 entries and completed 7 364 laps and 32 976km. Due to the high interest, organisers split the event from four into six to accommodate all entries.
“It has been a jam-packed league and we are so proud of our riders. Each one of them trained really hard and gave the 2018 season their absolute all. There’s already talk of the 2019 league. But for now, we’re still enjoying the celebrations,” said Deon Steyn, race director for Gauteng region.
The Spur Schools MTB League, currently in its 10th year, is the country’s largest high school cycling programme and the main nursery for talent in the sport.
