Laerskool Randhart riders make Gauteng SANESA Nationals team
Hard work, courage, and a special bond with their horses have earned four Laerskool Randhart learners a place on the Gauteng SANESA Nationals team.
Four learners from Laerskool Randhart will represent Gauteng at the SANESA Nationals from October 4 to 11 after progressing through tough district qualifiers and provincial finals.
Through dedication, perseverance, and a deep bond with their horses, René Wessels, Makayla van Greuning, Ava Myburgh, and Jessica Hefer have proven themselves among the province’s top young equestrians.
René Wessels: First-year success
For first-time SANESA competitor René Wessels, riding her spirited thoroughbred Crossways has been a revelation.

“I was surprised and shocked. It feels like I actually have a talent for a sport that is very challenging, both for the rider and the horse,” she said.
Her mother, Tonia, notes that early mornings, grooming, and tacking up have taught René discipline and focus, which have carried over into her schoolwork. René’s debut included a second place in show jumping at her first qualifier, leading to her selection for the Ekurhuleni district at regionals. Coach Heidi Gross Scriven praises her “bold, competitive spirit and tenacity to do what it takes to win.”
Makayla van Greuning: Training Mushka to triumph
Makayla van Greuning has built a strong partnership with Mushka, a one-rider horse she trained herself.

“Being part of the Gauteng team is a privilege. It’s the result of years of hard work and daily training,” she said.
Her record includes SANESA Nationals selections from level zero in 2022 through to level three in 2025, as well as top finishes at Youth Championships. Coach Bernice Clarke highlights her perseverance and ability to improve both horse and rider. Makayla’s mother, Sunette, adds, “Horse riding is part of our everyday lives-she’s at the stables every day after school.”
Ava Myburgh: Rising star off-lead
At just eight years old, Ava Myburgh has progressed from lead rein to off-lead classes, riding Christmas Blessing.

Coach Anya Möller says, “Ava skipped level zero off-lead classes and still earned her place in the national team for show jumping against riders with far more experience.”
Her mother, Leoni, says the sport has built Ava’s resilience and confidence. Ava’s accolades include the Victor Ludorum award at the Rising Star Challenge and the Best Improved Child Rider trophy at Weltmeyer Stables.
Jessica Hefer: Turning challenges into triumph
After her previous pony was injured, Jessica Hefer quickly formed a winning partnership with young Misty Rose.
“We didn’t expect to compete this year, never mind qualify for nationals,” Jessica said.

Coach Möller praises her ability to read a show jumping course and guide an inexperienced pony to success in just one year. Jessica’s mother, Charlene, says her daughter’s four weekly training sessions – rain or shine – reflect patience and perseverance. Jessica’s past achievements include winning nationals in 2022 with her old pony Tanzi and podium finishes at the Private SA Championships with Misty Rose.
School pride
Laerskool Randhart’s David Lawrenz expressed the school’s pride:
“This is a wonderful reflection of their dedication, talent, and hard work. We know they will represent Gauteng with the same perseverance and sportsmanship they show every day at school.”
