Alberton’s Bryan Thysse crowned SA light-heavyweight champion

Thysse stopped Michael Head in the ninth round at Emperors Palace to capture the national belt and Rising Titans title.

On October 4, Bryan Thysse of Alberton became the third member of his family to win a national boxing title.

Thysse convincingly defeated Michael Head of Benoni in the headline bout of the Destiny’s Decree Box and Dine Tournament at Emperors Palace’s Centre Court to claim the vacant South African light-heavyweight belt.

It wasn’t the fight of the night, but Thysse applied pressure from the outset, making it clear he was determined to secure the title.

Head’s gutsy performance, however, saw the fight reach the ninth round before a flurry of blows from Thysse prompted the referee to intervene and stop the contest.

This TKO victory sees Bryan follow in the footsteps of his father, Andre Thysse, a former SA super middleweight champion, and his older brother, Brandon, who holds the SA junior middleweight belt.

In addition, the win also earned Bryan the Rising Titans title, a tournament-within-a-tournament competition that brought him extra bragging rights and a sizeable prize purse.
