Hoërskool Marais Viljoen High School rugby coaches scout local talent at Alberton primary schools
From Laerskool Orion to President Steyn and Randhart, Hoërskool Marais Viljoen High School’s rugby coaches are making their presence felt on local sidelines as they support young talent, strengthen community ties and inspire the next generation of Alberton rugby players.
As the school rugby season gains momentum across Alberton, Hoërskool Marais Viljoen High School’s rugby management and coaching staff have been making regular visits to local primary schools in search of promising young talent while also building stronger community connections through sport.
The coaching team recently visited Laerskool Orion, Laerskool President Steyn, and Laerskool Randhart, where they spent time supporting players and sharing advice with young athletes eager to improve their game.
“It is always special to be able to visit and share tips with our neighbouring primary schools who share the same passion for sport, development and school pride,” the school said following the visits.

The schools showcased not only exciting rugby action but also the strong sporting culture developing among Alberton’s younger players. The Marais coaches also attended rugby matches at these schools, where they watched young players in action.
According to the coaching staff, the young players’ “passion for rugby, good sportsmanship and hard work on the field was visible in every game.”
The visit formed part of Marais Viljoen’s broader effort to encourage grassroots rugby development while identifying future players who could one day wear the Marais Viljoen jersey.

“There was a lot of good rugby to see, from the U9B team to the first team,” the school shared. “Everyone showed good skills, teamwork and perseverance that stood out at every level.”
The coaching staff congratulated Laerskool Randhart on hosting a “successful and beautiful rugby afternoon”, adding that both the hospitality and standard of rugby were impressive.
For many Alberton families, rugby remains an important part of school culture and community life, and Marais Viljoen’s outreach visits continue to strengthen relationships between local schools while inspiring young players to pursue their sporting ambitions.
With talent clearly emerging across Alberton’s primary school fields, the future of local rugby looks bright.
