Alberton and Bassonia karate clubs claim 81 medals at national championships
The clubs claimed a third overall in South Africa returning home with an impressive medal haul of 81 national championship medals.
Alberton JKA and Bassonia JKA Karate Clubs, operating under the Karate Syndicate banner, have once again cemented their reputation as some of South Africa’s leading dojos after an outstanding performance at the SA JKA National Championships.
Competing against some of the country’s strongest karate talent, the combined clubs finished third overall in South Africa, an extraordinary achievement considering that the two positions ahead of them were occupied by entire provincial teams.
The clubs returned home with an impressive medal haul of 18 gold, 24 silver and 39 bronze medals – a total of 81 national championship medals.

In addition to the medal winners, numerous competitors secured top eight placings in their respective divisions, earning qualification to represent South Africa at the prestigious JKA Indo Pacific Cup, which will be held in Mauritius in September.
The SA JKA National Championship is widely regarded as the most prestigious karate tournament in the country. The event attracts more than 4 000 entries over two days and is conducted across eight competition areas (tatamis), supported by over 100 judges and referees.
These exceptional results are a testament to the dedication and commitment of the students, the unwavering support of their parents, and the tireless efforts of the clubs’ highly experienced instructors and coaching team.
“We are incredibly proud of every competitor who stepped onto the tatami. Success at this level is built on years of consistent training, discipline, perseverance and teamwork. These achievements belong to the entire karate family,” said senseis Bruce and Karyn Smith.

Under the watchful eyes of senior instructors, senseis Bruce Smith (7th Dan) and Karyn Smith (6th Dan), Alberton JKA and Bassonia JKA offer traditional Shotokan karate classes for children and adults aged five years and older.
Training takes place Monday to Thursday in a safe, structured and supportive environment that promotes fitness, confidence, discipline and self-defence skills. All instructors are first-aid qualified, hold police clearances, and hold safeguarding certification.
