Royal Schools Alberton executive principal inspires through ninth Comrades Marathon finish
After completing his ninth Comrades Marathon, Royal Schools Alberton executive principal Basil Freitas is already preparing for next year’s historic 100th edition, where he hopes to earn the coveted green number.
Executive principal of Royal Schools Alberton, Basil Freitas, has once again demonstrated that perseverance, discipline and commitment extend far beyond the classroom after successfully completing his ninth Comrades Marathon.
Freitas crossed the finish line of the 89km this year’s up run in a time of 10:33, bringing him one step closer to achieving one of the race’s most respected milestones, the coveted green number, awarded to runners who complete 10 Comrades Marathons.
His Comrades journey began in 2015 after someone suggested he take up the challenge as a way of managing the stress and pressure that comes with leading a school.

At 48 years old, he completed his first up run in 10:04, an achievement that sparked a passion for the world’s oldest and largest ultramarathon.
He soon discovered the unique challenge of alternating up and down runs between Durban and Pietermaritzburg and was motivated to complete consecutive races to earn the sought-after back-to-back medal.
Since then, he has continued returning to the start line, embracing the physical and mental demands of the event.
“Running the Comrades Marathon has taught me the importance of preparation, discipline, and never giving up. I’m proud to have completed my ninth race, and I’m already looking forward to next year’s 100th edition, where I hope to earn my green number. I also hope my journey inspires our learners to work hard and believe in themselves,” said Freitas.
Although he admits age has slowed him somewhat, Freitas remains determined. His focus is now firmly on next year’s historic 100th edition of the Comrades Marathon, where he hopes to complete his 10th race, earn his green number, and, with a likely down run, improve his finishing time to under 10 hours.

Reflecting on the marathon, Freitas said success comes down to proper preparation, hydration, nutrition, discipline, commitment and having the right running shoes.
He believes the same principles that carry runners through the gruelling race also contribute to success in education.
As executive principal, he leads what he proudly describes as the number one performing independent school in the Ekurhuleni South Education District, following the school’s 100% matric pass rate in 2025.
Preparations for his next Comrades challenge begin next month, and he hopes his journey will inspire learners to pursue their own goals with determination and resilience.
Royal Schools Alberton congratulated Freitas on his latest achievement, praising his unwavering dedication both on the road and in the classroom.
The school said his determination, endurance and leadership serve as a powerful example to learners, proving that success is built through hard work, resilience, and never giving up.
