Alberton judoka Zander Woest earns Johannesburg Judo African Open bronze medal

Twenty one year old Alberton judoka Zander Woest has brought home a bronze medal from the Johannesburg Judo African Open , marking a significant achievement for both himself and Kimura Judo Club Alberton after years of dedication

Alberton resident Zander Woest (21) has earned an international podium finish after winning a bronze medal in the men’s +100kg division at the Johannesburg Judo African Open, held at the Brixton Multi-Purpose Centre.

Competing in the senior age category for the first time, Woest represented South African judo against international opposition at one of the continent’s premier tournaments.

The competition was contested in a repechage format, giving athletes a second opportunity to compete for a bronze medal after an early defeat. Woest fought two matches during the tournament.

He lost his opening contest to an opponent from Saudi Arabia before advancing to the bronze medal contest, where his South African opponent withdrew due to injury, securing the bronze medal.

The result marks the latest achievement in a journey that began 16 years ago when Woest first took up judo. Months of intensive preparation at the Alberton Wrestling Club helped him prepare for the international competition.

Woest said the bronze medal has motivated him to aim even higher.

“The bronze medal is an opportunity to grow and to chase gold in the next competition. I don’t see a match as a loss but a learning experience to better prepare for the next one,” he said.

He also expressed his gratitude to the athletes from the Alberton Wrestling Club who assisted him with his preparation for the tournament.

Kimura Judo Club Alberton head coach Monty Kalil praised Woest’s dedication and said the achievement reflects years of commitment to the sport.

“I’m proud of Zander carrying the club’s name not just in the way he coaches but in competition as well. He’s been with me for 12 years. I’ve seen him grow up into the man he has become today.

“Kimura Judo Club Alberton is a small club growing like an oak tree; slow but strong. We focus on helping children develop self-confidence, discipline and self-control, as well as their mental and physical development,” he said.

The club offers training for children from five years, as well as beginner and adult classes. Training takes place every Monday and Wednesday at the Alberton Wrestling Club.

Children’s classes are held from 17:30 to 18:30, followed by adult classes from 18:30 to 19:30. Both boys and girls are welcome.

The club also offers prospective members a free first month of training, allowing them to experience the sport before joining.
