Five ways pets can help you be healthier
Besides being cute, cuddly and clever, pets are also really good for your health.
After spending nearly two years in lockdown, we now more than ever understand the importance and value of having a pet in our lives. For many, it was their dog, cat, bird or bunny who kept them sane while being cooped up at home. Here are five of the ways you can improve your health by having a pet:
Calming effect
Pets have a calming effect on us and studies have shown that having a pet around can reduce stress levels in the office as well as increase productivity and boost overall morale. Simply petting a dog can lower levels of anxiety and blood pressure as well as slow down your heart rate.Â
Give them a hug
Pets are not only wonderful companions who help reduce feelings of loneliness, they are also great listeners and give you unconditional love – and your body shows it. Cuddling your pet can increase your level of oxytocin (the love hormone). Various forms of pet therapy can assist in mental and physical health treatment.
Play yourself happy
Playing with a dog, cat, or other pet can elevate levels of serotonin and dopamine, which act to calm and relax you and make you feel happier.
Step up your exercise
A dog is the ideal partner to encourage you to go for a regular walk or jog. The fresh air and exercise will in turn help boost your mood and improve your sleep. You will also find it much easier to socialise with people, as your dog will often be a talking point with strangers.
Help you feel safe
Having a dog by your side helps you feel more alert and aware of your surroundings. You know you can rely on your pooch to sound the alarm should there be a problem, which in turn helps you feel more at ease and safe.
