Alex Men’s Forum fights GBV by giving back to community

ALEXANDRA – Children and the elderly form an easy target group for violence as both groups cannot fight for themselves, says Mphephu.

Many organisations in Alexandra are involved in the fight against gender-based violence in one way or the other and Alex Men’s Forum has chosen to give back to the community as one of the ways of tackling the issue.

The chairperson of the forum Charles Mphephu was the recipient of a Rotary International award recently in recognition for his work with men in the township regarding their treatment of the fairer sex.

On November 30, Mphephu led his organisation in the donation of 80-bed sheets to Itlhokomeleng Old Age Home, and Alex Hospice and Rehab Centre.

The forum also donated 100 bedsheets, six blankets, 25 children’s bibs, six children’s duvet covers and 10kg of soup to Ndlovu Daycare Centre which is situated inside the KwaNobuhle Hostel and run by Eunice Hadebe.

“The reason we made these donations, in partnership with Rotary Community Corp of Alexandra, as part of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-based Violence against Women and Children was based on the fact that we operate 365 days a year in dealing with the root causes of gender-based violence.

“Gender-based violence and 16 Days of Activism touches the lives of the people were it hurts the most and we want to show our support as well, not just by joining the frontline in the fight, but by also giving back as well,” Mphephu said.

He added children also formed an easy target group for violence, including the elderly who could no longer fight for themselves. “It is for this reason we also targeted children’s centres and the old age homes in the township.”
