Gauteng voters turn out as over 500 000 register and update details over registration weekend
Over 500 000 residents spent part of the June registration weekend making sure they are properly registered, so they can vote in their local communities this year.
With the 2026 local government elections drawing closer, thousands of Gauteng residents used the June registration weekend to ensure they are correctly placed in their voting wards.
Gauteng recorded 502 229 registration transactions over the two days.

This included 85 406 new registrations and 416 823 updates and confirmations, as voters checked and corrected their details.
In local government elections, being registered in the correct ward is critical, as voters can only cast their ballot at the voting station where they are registered.
The high number of updates shows that many residents took the opportunity to get their details right.
To make it easier for people to participate, the electoral commission has made the online voter registration portal zero-rated. Residents can now register or update their information without using data.

A second registration weekend has also been scheduled for August 1 and 2, giving more people in the province the chance to register or make changes ahead of the elections.
Registered voters can verify their details online, through the IEC mobile app, by SMSing their ID number to 32810, or by calling the IEC contact centre on 0800 11 8000.
