This follows the launch of the nutrition education programme by Tiger Brands in association with the Department of Basic Education at Ikage Primary School.
“The world is facing new health challenges and threats including a significant increase in chronic diseases arising from an aging population and unhealthy lifestyles,” said corporate affairs group executive of Tiger Brands, Alex Mathole.
“It is with this backdrop that we launch the nutrition education programme that will touch more than 18 000 pupils who will also receive stationery packs that include nutrition and health messaging,” Mathole said, adding that the programme would seek to instil healthy eating habits and promote a healthy lifestyle among the country’s future leaders.
“By implementing this programme we are encouraging pupils to make the right food choices, not only for themselves but also for their families. Research has proven that healthier pupils concentrate far better in the classroom and deliver better results,” said the department’s deputy director general Gugu Ndebele.
The programme will also be rolled out to Bovet, Carter, Dr Knak, Ekukhanyisweni, Emfundisweni, Gordon, Iphutheng, Ithute, M C Weiler, Pholosho, Skeen, and Zenzeleni primary schools.
