Racing with colour

EMMARENTIA - 5km race brings smiles to its participants faces.

The Colour Run South Africa, also known as the Happiest 5km race on the planet, brought about 10 000 runners together at Roosevelt High School for a unique paint race that celebrated health, happiness and individuality.

“The growth of the race has just been simply amazing, not just in Johannesburg but nationally too,” said Leon Swanepoel, head of The Colour Run South Africa. “This race caters for a variety of people and people can enjoy the entertainment while still having fun and socialising with friends and family.”

He added that even though there was a lot of planning involved in pulling off an event of this nature and size, it was completely worth it, as all the hard work was justified with all the happy faces in the crowd.

“Today was amazing,” said a participant of the race Boitumelo Molobela. “It was so much fun. You didn’t have to run if you didn’t want to. I liked the fact that it was not a competitive race and as people were walking they could enjoy their surroundings and socialise.”

One of the main sponsors, Capitec Bank, joined hands with The Colour Run South Africa to not only add more fun to the race, but to also make a difference in communities. Capitec Bank donated R10 from each ticket sold to bring smiles to the faces of the pupils of Moses Maren Technical Secondary School based in Eikenhof, Gauteng, to help the school to buy much-needed resources. A total of R73 300 was raised for the school.

“The run is in line with the values of the bank,” said Megan Wagner of the bank’s brand marketing. “We want people to be happy, healthy and express themselves. It is breathtaking to see so many people come together and express themselves and be free.”

Crowds of colourful people gathered at the main stage after the race for a colourful extravaganza. “The colour splashes were beautiful,” said Radhika Patel, another participant of the race. “Seeing the different colours fill the air was just magical and the music and laughter were just great with good vibes.”
