Alexandra Automotive Hub set to drive local small business growth

Local entrepreneurs will receive dedicated facilities and training to flourish in the automotive industry following the launch of a new automotive hub in Marlboro.

The Alexandra Automotive Hub is set to drive inclusive growth and economic opportunities for locals, according to Ward 108 councillor Deborah Francisco.

The City of Johannesburg launched the facility in collaboration with the Automotive Industry Development Centre and the Gauteng Growth and Development Agency.

“Many local businesses and young people have faced challenges accessing economic opportunity and business support, as well as technical skills development, including meaningful participation in established industries,” she said.

The hub, with its 17 workshops, aims to address those challenges by providing 17 local businesses with facilities and skills development opportunities.

Francisco urged relevant departments and development agencies to ensure that opportunities arising from the hub are accessible to qualifying residents.

She also called for clear communication and transparency. “Community participation and fairness will be essential in ensuring that the benefits of this initiative reach those who need them the most,” Francisco said.

She added that partnerships between government, the private sector and the community are crucial to building a sustainable local economy.

City of Johannesburg MMC for Economic Development Nomoya Mnisi said collaboration is essential to support the sustainability and effective use of the facility, while monitoring progress against clear objectives.

“We must also recognise that infrastructure requires shared responsibility. Government must fulfil its obligations, businesses must make productive use of the opportunities available, industry partners must contribute their expertise where possible and the community must help protect the investment,” she said.

Mnisi said the success of the hub should be reflected in tangible results, including business support, training opportunities facilitated and, where possible, jobs created.

She acknowledged that locals do not lack skills or ambition, but need an environment where these can be turned into greater opportunity.

Francisco called on local entrepreneurs to capitalise on the facility, equip themselves and help establish Alexandra as a meaningful contributor to the economy.

“As Ward 108, we welcome this initiative and we look forward to working with all stakeholders to ensure that Alexandra’s economic potential is recognised, supported and realised,” Francisco said.
