Robbers get stiff sentences

ALEXANDRA - The Alexandra Magistrates' Court recently sentenced six men to jail terms ranging from 14 to 18 years for a case of aggravated armed robbery committed in 2013 at a Jet Mart shop at the Alex Plaza.

The Alexandra Magistrates’ Court recently sentenced six men to jail terms ranging from 14 to 18 years for a case of aggravated armed robbery committed in 2013 at a Jet Mart shop at the Alex Plaza.

The court sentenced Zama Mhlongo and Mzameleni Dubazane, who had previous criminal convictions, to 18 years imprisonment; Eric Mthabela, Buyani Mthama and Thulani Mkhize to 15 years; and Kambule Shezi to 14 years.

The court heard that the men entered the shop just after it opened for business and robbed it of cellphones and cash amounting to R10 000. Police, acting on a tip-off, entered the shop while the robbery was taking place and arrested all six men and recovered all the stolen items and money. Four firearms were also recovered.

The charges included the possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
