Flying Squad recovers two hijacked vehicles in Alexandra

Police patrols in Alexandra lead to the recovery of two abandoned vehicles stolen during separate incidents.

The Johannesburg Flying Squad recovered two stolen vehicles in Alexandra on October 6.

According to Johannesburg Flying Squad media liaison officer Raymond Sambo, the first vehicle, a white Volkswagen Polo, was found abandoned while the squad was on patrol at the corner of 9th Avenue and Richard Baloyi Street. Sambo said the vehicle had been taken from its owner in a case registered at the Ivory Park Police Station.

Minutes later, officers patrolling Riverpark found a white Toyota Prado abandoned at the corner of Marula Crescent.

Both vehicles were booked in at the pound for safekeeping and further investigation.

The recoveries come as Alexandra Police Station continues to battle a rise in hijackings, according to station commander Brigadier Vusimuzi Ngubane. Police previously identified the intersections of Vincent Tshabalala Road with 8th, 16th and 2nd avenues as hijacking hotspots.

They managed to curb incidents along Vincent Tshabalala Road, but the overall number of cases did not drop significantly. Instead, police revealed that hijackers moved into the inner sections of the community.

On October 6, Ngubane confirmed that incidents are once again occurring along Vincent Tshabalala Road. “What we are doing from our side is ensuring that we have officers who are visible in all these hotspots,” he said, adding that the hijacking cases remain under investigation.

He also urged motorists, especially e-hailing drivers, to stay alert and pay close attention to anything suspicious. “If they suspect something, they must not even give a ride to a person,” he said.
