Shoprite feeds Ratang Bana on Mandela Day

ALEXANDRA – A sumptuous meal was provided for many hungry bellies by the Shoprite Group on Mandela Day.

More than 1 000 community members and those aided by the Ratang Bana Foundation, including children and the elderly, were served a sumptuous meal by the Shoprite Group as part of its Mandela Day initiative.

About 20 Shoprite staff members descended on the foundation, situated in Ext 9 in Alexandra, on 15 July and not only filled hungry bellies but also renewed the premises of Ratang Bana with a splash of paint and fixed a few broken windows.

Besides feeding the children and the elderly, Shoprite Group public relations manager Sabrina Gramoney said the group also provided the children with entertainment on the day while other staff members tended the garden on the foundation’s premises which provides nutritious vegetables to the community.

Prior to their arrival, Gramoney said the group spent two weeks at Ratang Bana extending the kitchen and providing new equipment such as a fridge, gas stove and utensils.

“We also did a makeover of the tool shed, provided them with gardening equipment, vegetable seeds and seedlings, repaired the shedding nets and the children’s playground. All this was done under our #ActForChange,” Gramoney said.

She said the #ActForChange was about providing ‘our customers with low prices so they can feel the change in their pockets while we change their communities for the better’. This is our way of giving back to the communities in which we operate,” she added.

“With more food resources coming their way, Ratang Bana could easily exceed their target of 400 people by far,” she said”. She added that she had been told the need was great within the community.
