Battery thieves remanded in custody by Alex Magistrates’ Court

ALEXANDRA – They were part of a gang who was pounced on by security guards alerted to the theft in progress at about 6am on 29 September.

Two suspects arrested for the alleged theft of batteries from a Vodacom transponder station in Kyalami were remanded in custody by the Alex Magistrates’ Court pending further investigation.

An undisclosed number of their accomplices escaped in one of two vans in which they were loading the batteries. One of the suspects was apprehended after he jumped over a wall into a neighbouring property. Eight batteries were recovered from the van and investigations led to the arrest of the second suspect days later.

The suspects used an angle grinder to break into the station. The number of batteries taken by the escapees wasn’t specified.
