Alexandra police report 3 murders and multiple arrests in weekly crime surge
Station commander Vusimuzi Ngubane breaks down ongoing investigations into violent crimes, carjackings, and drug busts across the township.
Alexandra police recorded three murders during the week of September 7 to 13, according to the station’s latest crime statistics.
The statistics, shared by station commander Vusimuzi Ngubane, indicate that the murders sit alongside two cases of attempted murder from the same week.
Ngubane revealed that, so far, not a single arrest has been made across either category, stating that investigations into all of the incidents remain ongoing.

Ngubane also confirmed police recorded two cases of carjacking during the week. Although the number recorded was notably low relative to Alexandra’s long-standing reputation as a hotspot for carjacking, Ngubane noted that the underlying trend remains unchanged, as hijackers continue to target e-hailing drivers specifically, feeding a market that extends well beyond Alexandra’s borders.
Ngubane said of the 15 cases of common assault recorded during the week, police made arrests in nine. A further two suspects were arrested for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, out of at least 11 such cases recorded overall.
Ngubane attributed the higher arrest rate to the nature of assault cases specifically, where suspects and victims are frequently known to one another.
“On assault, we do not struggle with suspects. We arrest them while the complainant is still here,” he said.
Police recorded two sexual offence cases during the week, with neither resulting in an arrest.

“They are under investigation at the moment. Suspects are known but not yet arrested,” Ngubane confirmed.
Police reported more concrete progress on drug-related crime, with at least eight suspects arrested on drug offences during the week. A further 13 people were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol, Ngubane revealed. He pointed to these figures as evidence of sustained enforcement activity beyond the more high-profile violent crime categories.
Furthermore, of the four cases of house burglary and theft recorded during the week, he said police arrested two suspects.
Separately, in what amounted to the single largest enforcement action of the week by arrest count, police detained a total of 44 undocumented migrants.
