Squabbles are cause of Alex under development

ALEXANDRA – Bapela says if Alexandrians can get their act together, the government will unleash its development plans for the iconic township.

The government has grand plans up its sleeve for Alexandra with funding capable of transforming the country’s oldest township into a top-notch suburb for all to envy.

This was disclosed by Deputy Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Obed Bapela in an interview with Alex News after he celebrated the 91st birthday of Itlhokomeleng Old Age Home founder Dr Marjorie Manganye on January 31.

Bapela said, “If they [Alexandrians] put their differences and disunity and learn to work together, the government will unleash all its plans that it has on transforming this township for the benefit of all that call it their home,” he said.

Pressed to elaborate on these differences and disunity by Alex News, Bapela said there were differences of opinion among the landowners and the #AlexTotalShutdownMovement.

“Even within the landowners, there are differences and disunity as there was a split from Alpoa [Alexandra Land and Property Owners Association] which gave birth to Apor [Alexandra Property Owners’ Rights]. There are also differences between Alpoa, Apor and the shutdown movement.

“It is this disunity and squabbles that curtail the development plans in the township. I wish and hope the people of Alexandra can find one another and then you can see the miracles that government can do for this township,” Bapela said.

Without wanting to disclose the plans and money available, Bapela insisted ‘there are plans up our sleeves for the township and funding to meet those plans but they are being scuppered by the disunity that we see today among our people’.

“There are outcries about the conditions in the township and as government, we have the plans to turn around Alex for the better but for as long as we are disunited and squabbling among ourselves, it makes it impossible for us to deliver.”
