Former Alex League whipping boys now in SAB League

Ma Afrika FC paraded their new and most probably only trophy in their cabinet through the potholed streets of Alexandra.

This to mark their departure from the Alex Northrand Local Football Association they joined in 2012 and entry into the totally different football theatre of the SAB League.

This comes after a decade of being the whipping boys of township football after the 15th Avenue side literally took the Alex Northrand LFA Promotional League by the scruff of the neck and blasted their way into the one-rung-up-the-ladder of promotion to the ultimate football mecca of South Africa, the Premier Soccer League.

Ma Afrika beat arch-rivals Norwood Young Stars 3–1 to secure their spot in the SAB League, and the right to brag in the township with their new trophy.

For the chairperson of the club Ramovha Khathuchelo, popularly known as Khathu, the parading of the trophy was not so much to brag but one designed to thank ‘our fans of the club and the community of Alexandra that stood by the team during the dark days’.

“I can assure our fans and the community that we’re not just going there [SAB League] to add numbers. We’re going to compete, though there may be challenges but hopefully not insurmountable ones,” Khathu said.

Khathu said he had a plan up his sleeve to ensure that his team climbed the ladder of the SAB League so that ‘we ultimately as a township have our own team representing us in the prestigious DStv Premiership.

“I am having talks with other chairpersons of various clubs to map a strategy of success, which I am not at liberty to disclose now as negotiations are ongoing, but what I can say is that the LFA is playing ball to the various ideas.

“Once the time is ripe and we have reached common understanding as club chairpersons, we will then call the media to make the big announcement.”
