Queen Zulu of Miss Heritage vows to wage war against drugs in Alex
Fikile Zulu (68) was crowned Queen of the Miss Heritage beauty pageant at a well-attended event at the Kings Cinema in Alexandra on Heritage Day.
Tears of joy flowed down the cheeks of the various Miss Heritage contestants when the final of the pageant was concluded at Kings Cinema in 2nd Avenue, Alexandra.

Sixty-eight-year-old Fikile Zulu of Phase 1 was crowned Queen of the main contest of the elderly ladies while 76-year-old Dudu Moropa, who described herself as a staunch member of the Christ Embassy Church, came in as first princess and another 68-year-old Fikile Mothibedi was 3rd princess.

Speaking in an interview with Alex News, Zulu said she and her princesses and other contestants will seek to have an audience with President Cyril Ramaphosa in hopes of getting him to ‘save our children from devastation by drugs and being shot and killed by gun-toting criminals.

“Drug dealers within our communities are well-known but little is being done to flush them out of the community. As elderly mothers, we are being disturbed by the prevalence of guns in our community and we would humbly want to have an audience with the President to share some of our concerns with him,” Zulu said.

She said she will also use her crown to get the youth to embrace their culture, language, traditions, and their traditional foods as well. The way, things are going now in our country, there will soon come a time in a couple of years when our children will be speaking nothing else but English.

“We need to work hard to encourage our children to speak their mother tongue or else our languages will perish. There is also a new trend of young girls abandoning education and opting to go for ‘ethwaseni’ [ritual education undergone to become a sangoma] and we not sure whether this is genuine just a trend,” Zulu said.

In the girls’ category, Sandtonview High School learner Kutloano Baza (14) took the first princess crown while Nelisiwe Maphanga (17) of Minerva High School became the second princess. Thembi Morerwa (20), a 2020 matriculant of Minerva, was crowned Queen.

“I am happy I have bagged the crown so I can now realise my dream of working closely with our young girls in the township to inculcate the importance of education and having dreams in life and fulfilling them,” she said.
