Following the tragic death of a child and hospitalisation of two others linked to snacks from a local spaza shop, the Alexandra community is rallying for change.

A child died and two others were admitted to the hospital, including the mother of the deceased, allegedly after consuming snacks from a local spaza shop.

The incident occurred on November 2 at 29-5th Avenue, Alexandra.

The shop, where the snacks were allegedly purchased, was found closed and the shopkeepers were nowhere to be found when community members rushed to investigate the situation.

The community called a meeting with all landlords who host foreign-owned spaza shops, along with concerned community members, to discuss the issue on November 5, at 17:00 at 12 Avenue Sankopano.

Community members are asking: ‘How many lives must be lost before law enforcement and the Department of Small Businesses take meaningful action.”
