Alexandra musician Smiley Da Wiz builds career on consistency and ownership
The Alexandra artist is focused on full control of his craft, staying consistent, and creating pathways for the next generation of kasi creatives.
Growing up in Alexandra has defined every part of musician Smiley Da Wiz’s sound, with the township’s energy, struggles and creative spirit running through his music.
“Growing up in Alex has shaped me into the artist I am. Alex is a vibrant place full of creatives. Living in Alex on its own is an experience, so my music revolves around real-life experiences,” says the musician.
Consistency remains non-negotiable. “The reason I stay consistent is that my craft keeps evolving. I try to stay relevant with the times so that my music is easily relatable. Seeing some of my colleagues make it in the mainstream also gave me belief that my time is coming.

“My patience has been tested the most because some days it feels difficult, especially when there is no income, opportunities or connections,” says Smiley Da Wiz, “but the belief keeps me going and motivated.”
His sound mixes local flavour with wider appeal. “My sound is a blend of trap music, kwaito, R&B and Mzombonko. I bring kasi vibes into global sounds using catchy hooks and flows.”

One of his recent tracks, King, came about unexpectedly. “King is a song that was not planned. We were having a camp in a studio with various artists. It happened that another two collaborators and I played the beat and we managed to work on it. It didn’t make sense at first, but after recording the hook everything came to light.”
He describes himself as a young OG. “According to me, a young OG is the definition of someone like me, young and independent.

“This chapter of my career is about ownership. Having full control of my craft and also paving the way for my fellow colleagues.”
His advice to upcoming artists is practical. “You need to be disciplined and also engage in music business workshops. Also register with The Southern African Music Rights Organisation, the Recording Industry of South Africa, Composers, Authors and Publishers Association, etc. Never give up on your dreams.”
Looking to the future, Smiley Da Wiz aims to become a central figure in the industry. “In five years’ time, Smiley Da Wiz will be one of the main figures of Alex hip-hop music and also in South African hip-hop in general. I see myself as a hip-hop pioneer, creating opportunities for others and taking the game to the next level. In the future, Wiz Fan Records will engage in artist management, events and more.”
