First day of school mixed reactions in Alexandra

A fresh group of Grade 1s has been ushered into their first year of academic undertaking, some with more bravery than others.

Schools reopened on January 15 across Gauteng, and for many, this was their first time at their new home away from home.

Fearful tears, excitement and optimism filled the air at Gordon Primary School, where this year’s cohort of Grade 1 learners gathered out in the school quad to await being placed into their ‘big school’ classes at last.

Where some learners bravely welcomed the opportunity to celebrate the occasion with a photograph in Alex News, one or two immediately broke down into tears before frantically pulling their parents away.

One brave Grade 1 learner, Amahle Makhunga, bravely shared her ambition to someday be a medical doctor – making her mother Zandile beam with pride on her daughter’s first day of school.

Proud father Lucas Mojapelo, and mother Zanele Tsumela accompany their daughter Kutlwelo Tsumela to her first day of big school, accompanied by baby brother Tshiamo.

Returning learners were ushered to their previous year’s classrooms, where they would be led to their new classrooms after assembly. The atmosphere at the school buzzed with readiness for a new academic year.
