Bryanston’s netball youngster wins three netball trophies at UKZN

Andiswa Zakwe shines bright, claiming three prestigious trophies for outstanding netball performance at the University of KwaZulu-Natal.

In a shining moment for both individual excellence and team spirit, Andiswa ‘Ma-Arh’ Zakwe, a talented 19-year-old netball player from Bryanston, has made a significant impact on the University of KwaZulu-Natal’s (UKZN) Westville campus netball club.

As she pursues her studies, Zakwe has already established herself as a force to be reckoned with on the court, being awarded three coveted trophies for her outstanding contributions to the UKZN Westville Netball Squad in 2024.

Zakwe’s accolades include the prestigious Best Newcomer award, underscoring her immediate impact within the squad, as well as the title of Best Overall Player from the highly competitive UKZN Westville res tournament.

For her remarkable contributions to the game, Zakwe also received an award for active participation in the UKZN Westville Netball Squad, a testament to her dedication and passion.

Zakwe’s achievements have not gone unnoticed, and she expresses gratitude to her coaches and teammates for their unwavering support. “I am so thankful for the encouragement and mentorship I have received. My success is a collective effort, and I would not be where I am without my amazing team,” Zakwe said.

Before flourishing at UKZN, Zakwe made a name for herself during her years at Bizimali High School. Her talent caught the attention of selectors, leading to her inclusion in the Nkandla Municipality netball team, where she showcased her skills at a more competitive level.

Zakwe’s tenacity and determination on the court have laid a solid foundation for her burgeoning career.

Reflecting on her early days, she said: “Playing for the Nkandla Municipality was a huge stepping stone for me. It gave me the confidence to dream bigger and to believe that I can compete at higher levels.”

As a current student at UKZN, Zakwe is balancing her academic pursuits with her aspirations in sport. “Being in university has taught me the importance of time management. I want to excel academically while also pushing myself to be the best player I can be,” she said.

Zakwe’s dreams don’t stop at university-level netball. She has set her sights on joining the South African national netball team. “My ultimate goal is to wear the green and gold jersey for my country. I want to represent South Africa on the international stage and inspire other young girls to follow their dreams,” she concluded.
