JDA unveils R83.7m Sandton road strengthening project to enhance public transport

The Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA) has officially commenced the Rivonia-Katherine Corridor Road Strengthening Project, a pivotal element of the Rea Vaya Phase 1C initiative aimed at enhancing public transport infrastructure in the city.

In a move aimed at bolstering the City of Johannesburg’s public transport system, the Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA) has kicked off the much-anticipated Rivonia-Katherine Corridor Road Strengthening Project with a R83.7m budget.

This significant undertaking, which began on January 27, focuses on upgrading approximately 1.7km of Katherine Street between Rivonia Road and Pretoria Avenue.

The project boasts a substantial budget, with R43.4m dedicated to the Katherine Street section, and R40.3m allocated to the Rivonia Road section.

The development agency’s CEO, Themba Mathibe, said this project is a vital investment in the future of Johannesburg’s public transport network.

“We are committed to engaging with our communities throughout the construction process and ensuring that the infrastructure we build enhances mobility for all citizens. Our goal is to create an integrated transport system that is both efficient and accessible, fostering a more sustainable urban environment,” Mothibe said.

He added that beyond its primary goal of accommodating bus traffic for the Rea Vaya Phase 1C rollout, the project aims to ensure the long-term durability of the route, reduce congestion, lower the carbon footprint, encourage safe mobility, enhance the urban environment, and improve universal access for all users.

Recognising the potential disruptions, the JDA has established clear traffic management protocols. One lane in each direction will be temporarily closed, while remaining lanes will remain open, ensuring continued traffic movement.

“Construction activities will take place from 09:00 to 17:00, complemented by the installation of temporary traffic signs and the presence of flaggers to assist with traffic management.

“The JDA has prioritized community engagement, hosting several public meetings with stakeholders from Wards 91 and 103, as well as the Sandton Business District Committee, to inform residents about the project and address their concerns,” Mathibe said.

To ensure pedestrian safety, the project will include barricaded construction zones and clear signage for efficient navigation around the work areas, particularly around the new bus terminals.

“This project not only supports the Rea Vaya system but also aligns with the City of Johannesburg’s complete streets concept, promoting multi-modal transport options that include walking, cycling, and public transport, to create more livable community spaces,” Mathibe concluded.
