Writers will write: Alex man releases his debut anthology Only If I Can Sing

All the way from Limpopo, Alex resident Isaac Lekgothoane shares his first book with the community which inspired him to compile an anthology of his own short stories.

In an exploration of themes ranging from teenage pregnancy, teenage difficulties, crime, solitude, and family, local writer Isaac Lekgothoane has written and published his first book – and it’s aimed at creating awareness of the daily challenges lived by residents across Alexandra, and South Africa.

Lekgothoane reflected on his love for writing that led him to compiling Only If I Can Sing – his debut anthology of short stories.

“The book consists of four short stories, which are written in detailed form, where the characters are well developed, facing conflict and with relatable, intriguing, complex personalities,” said Lekgothoane. “Only If I Can Sing is a collection of the experiences and distinctive tales of indigenous individuals within various communities.”

As a self-published writer Lekgothoane said that the challenges he faces include the costs of publishing: acquiring barcodes, printing costs, and the affordability of a book. Still, he spoke highly on the benefits of self-publishing.

“I think self-published authors can benefit from the support of funders to reach a wider audience and platform to promote their books,” Lekgothoane said. “As much as you want to make profit, the printing, marketing, and promotion costs are sometimes massive.”

Originally from Lethlabile in Limpopo, Lekgothoane works in communications for the City of Johannesburg Ombudsman when he isn’t writing. He said he is currently working on his second title.

“Despite doing other things, I find time to write, brainstorming ideas on possible writing material. I’m busy finalising The Blackmailed Daughter,” said Lekgothoane.

Lekgothoane’s interest in storytelling began when he studied media and communications at university, which is when he realised how communication is the secret to pulling in consumers. In the end, he said, the entire process behind Only If I Can Sing took about five years to complete. In closing, he briefly reflected on his favourite short story from his anthology, Voodoo.

“When most readers read this short story, despite its lonely emotions, they are filled with smiles and laughter, based on how it’s told. This realisation also makes me happy, that I can put a smile on someone else’s face and make their day,” Lekgothoane said.
