Alexandra’s young stars shine in ATCA’s Saturday arts classes
The Saturday Arts Classes by the Alex Theatre Company and Academy is helping Alexandra’s youth advance their creative dreams.
Young creatives in Alexandra took centre stage as the Alex Theatre Company and Academy (ATCA) hosted another successful session of its Saturday Arts Classes, a programme designed to nurture talent in theatre, music, dance, and visual arts. The initiative, aimed at children aged 6–13 and youth aged 13–28, is proving to be a game-changer for aspiring artists in the community.

Acclaimed actor Kenneth Nkosi, who shared his industry insights and personal journey, treated students to an unforgettable masterclass. On March 15, excitement filled the room as Alexandra-born actor Zakhele Mabasa led a powerful acting session, captivating participants with his expertise and passion for storytelling. Students eagerly soaked up his advice, with many leaving inspired and motivated to pursue careers in the performing arts.

“Having someone from Alexandra, who has made a name for himself in the industry, come back to teach us, is incredible,” said Archie Matsetela, artistic director. “It shows that success is within reach if we put in the work.”
The programme goes beyond technical skills, offering mentorship and real-world industry exposure to prepare students for careers in South Africa’s competitive arts scene. Held every Saturday, the sessions provide a consistent and high-quality platform for young creatives to refine their craft. With the overwhelming enthusiasm and talent on display, it’s clear that ATCA’s initiative is shaping the next generation of South African artists, giving them the confidence and skills to step into the spotlight.
