The IIE’s Varsity College Sandton empowers young minds with human rights education
Grade 1 learners from Ekukhanyisweni Primary School in Alexandra learned about dignity, equality, and respect through an engaging puppet show organized by The IIE's Varsity College Sandton’s student volunteer body.
To ensure that they understand the importance of their rights, the Grade 1 learners from Ekukhanyisweni Primary School in Alexandra enjoyed a captivating puppet show, presented by The IIE’s Varsity College Sandton’s VC Cares (student volunteer body) and its Juridical Society.
According to Kate Traill, the college’s public relations and events co-ordinator, the puppet show allowed the learners to grasp complex human rights principles in a fun and interactive manner, highlighting key human rights principles. “In addition to the puppet story, the students led the learners in songs and interactive activities, which reinforced the message of dignity, equality, and respect.”

She added that the Ekukhanyisweni Primary School is The IIE’s Varsity College Sandton’s Kids Under the Mentorship of Others (KHUMO) partner. “KHUMO is The IIE’s Varsity College and IIE MSA’s national CSI initiative, which aims to enrich local schools by providing essential resources and infrastructure improvements.”

Thulani Zondo, a second-year IIE Bachelor of Computer and Information Sciences in Application Development student and a member of VC Cares, said: “This event brought back so many memories from my primary school days. It was a truly nostalgic experience.”
Zondo added that he is excited that they are educating children about human rights from a young age and grateful to be part of this initiative. “Looking back, I do not recall learning about human rights at an early age, but I now understand just how important it is.”
Traill explained that through initiatives like these, The IIE’s Varsity College Sandton emphasises the importance of education beyond the classroom, which fosters a sense of social responsibility among its students while making a tangible impact in the community. “The collaboration between the Juridical Society, VC Cares and Ekukhanyisweni Primary School reflects the campus’ dedication to empowering young minds and creating a brighter future for all.”
