World Phygital Community launches campaign to fuse sports and gaming

Paving the way for a transformative blend of traditional sports and digital gaming, the World Phygital Community is creating new opportunities for youth engagement and competition.

The World Phygital Community (WPC) recently launched an ambitious campaign aimed at introducing an innovative fusion of traditional sports and digital gaming to the African continent.

In this groundbreaking move, South Africa has taken centre stage in the burgeoning phygital sports revolution, set to transform the sports landscape across Africa.
Phygital refers to the seamless blending of physical and digital experiences to create more immersive and personalised interactions.

At a high-energy phygital football tournament held at Fives Futbol Balfour Park, fans witnessed an exhilarating competition that melded video game play with live athletic performance, as teams first showcased their skills in a football video game before heading to the pitch for a five-a-side showdown.

The combined scores determined the ultimate victor, illustrating the dynamic nature of this new sporting paradigm.

With WPC members drawn from 23 African nations, the momentum for phygital sports is palpable. In the past year alone, WPC members have orchestrated 16 tournaments across the continent, where 240 clubs competed for a place in the prestigious Games of the Future (GOTF) 2025, to be hosted in the UAE.

Phygital South Africa’s Edgar Sandamela emphasised the transformative impact of phygital sports. “Phygital presents an opportunity to engage new audiences, promote digital literacy, and encourage physical activity among young people. With the right support, we can make phygital sports a key part of the national and continental sports landscape.”

The WPC chairperson and managing director, Dan Merkley, underscored the long-term vision of the movement. “The combination of gaming and sports opens up endless possibilities. By uniting our efforts across Africa, we can foster talent, drive economic growth, and establish a powerful continental presence within the phygital realm.”

Merkley said the initiative aimed to bridge the gap between the rising interest in digital lifestyles and the need for physical engagement, giving youngsters a compelling reason to pursue an active lifestyle.

“As the phygital movement gains traction, the strategic focus extends towards creating global standards for this unique sport, as well as facilitating the growth of tournaments, which can eventually lead to participation in worldwide events.

“On the other side, the GOTF not only aims to showcase popular e-sports titles but also features innovative tech sports, such as VR drone racing and robot battles. With the inaugural event successfully launched last year, many are eagerly anticipating the upcoming games set to take place in Abu Dhabi in December,” Merkley added.“We are looking at a future where young athletes can proudly say they started their journey as phygital athletes, embracing the best of both physical activity and digital engagement.”
