The two teams had already suffered losses in their previous games and needed points to up their positions on the table, especially JBM FC, which currently sits in the bottom three with 23 points.

The first half ended in a stalemate, with neither side able to open the scoring. However, in the second half, Wits University broke the deadlock after JBM conceded a penalty. Lehlohonolo Morobi stepped up to take a spectacular penalty, beating JBM goalkeeper Nkhuwe Ngwepe.

This spurred JBM to look for the equaliser, and it came through Shanen Booysen, whose free-kick from outside the box went beyond Wits goalkeeper Phetolo Ledwaba’s reach to level matters at 1–1.

In the dying minutes of the match, JBM had a final chance at victory when they were also awarded a penalty. But, their hope for a last-minute miracle was shattered when Wits goalkeeper Phetolo Maphuthuma saved the spot kick.

Wits coach Thando Zulu said he was satisfied with the outcome of the game, despite the loss of two points to improve their position on the table.
“The draw means we get one point, so it is still good for us. We came here with three losses, and the goal was to get points, either by drawing or, if an opportunity arose, by winning,” he said.

JBM coach Styles Ledwaba said, “It was a wonderful game. We had a good start and we controlled the game, however, we did not use our chances. The boys were very good, but the problem is that we conceded goals.”

He added his team would continue to work hard to improve their standing on the table.
