Local artist Sifiso Gumede uses art to foster conversations around issues Alexandra residents are grappling with.

Just like most of the artists, Sifiso draws inspiration from the joys, hardships, and unbreakable spirit of its people. One of his most striking pieces, “Umashonisa” (a Zulu term for loan sharks) is a symbol of the burden many residents face due to unemployment and reliance on predatory lenders. He says it was born out of a desire to invoke conversations around how loan shacks plunge people into debt traps that often hamper their progress in life.

“With that piece, I was invoking a discussion around the loan sharks,” Gumede explains. “These loans trap us in a corner and affect our progression.” Through his art, he sheds light on systemic struggles while fostering dialogue about financial oppression in townships among other challenges.

Gumede sees himself as a storyteller, using his craft to preserve Alexandra’s heritage. He has installed public sculptures across the township. His work doe not just decorate spaces, it ensures Alex stories are told through art so that future generations can remember their roots.

“I involve the community in my work, telling our stories in ways that highlight both our challenges and our strengths,” he says.

While Gumede’s work is deeply local, his ambitions are global. He dreams of taking his art international, sharing Alexandra’s narratives with the world while continuing to develop his craft.

“I want it to inspire, educate, and endure,” he said. For Sifiso Gumede, art is more than expression, it’s activism, history, and a service to his community.
