Learners share love at old age home

Nokuthula Special School learners practise life skills by giving back to Itlhokomeleng's elderly.

Learners from Nokuthula Special School brought joy to Itlhokomeleng Old Age Home through their visit on May 27.
The visit allowed them to put their life skills into practice by engaging with and assisting the elderly. The visit was part of a broader programme aimed at teaching young people responsibility, empathy, and practical behavioural skills.

Chief occupational therapist at the school Eric Nkoana said that the visit was the culmination of a month-long lesson for boys aged 18 to 21 on giving back, self-care, environmental responsibility, and caring for others. “Today, we have been working on these skills for the past month, teaching them how to give back or how to help other people who are in need… skills they need for life,” Nkoana added.

The visit allowed learners to apply these lessons. They greeted the elderly, engaged in conversations, and gave them oranges, practising generosity and demonstrating love. Nkoana emphasised the value of their initiative. “Instead of always receiving, I think it is just important to also give, not only in the form of gifts but also just come and give with our time, to just be with people. Give love, I think that’s the best way to say it.”

Nkoana noted the mutual benefits of the interaction. For the elderly residents, the visit provided much-needed social engagement. For the learners, it was an opportunity to step outside their usual routines and serve others. Dr Marjorie Manganye, the CEO of Itlhokomeleng, thanked the school and highlighted the significance of the visit. In her address to the learners, she stressed the importance of caring for the elderly and commended the learners for their kindness.
